Hi there! My name is Miss Kelsey Kuszek and I am currently starting my sixth year as the general music teacher at Fort Miami and Wayne Trail Elementary schools in the Maumee City School District.
I currently reside in Maumee where I have lived my whole life. I attended Maumee City Schools and graduated in 2007. I started singing in the 3rd grade when I received my first solo in the song "Blue Skies" by Ella Fitzgerald. From then on, singing became my passion in life. I have performed the lead roles in many musical productions such as "You're a Good Man Charlie Brown, "The Sound of Music", "West Side Story", and "Hello, Dolly!". While in high school, I joined the Maumee Select Singers where our choir director, Amy Gorman, became one of my closest mentors.
After high school, I attended Bowling Green State University where I received my Bachelor's Degree in Music Education with an emphasis in general music. I gained another mentor, Sally Gardiner, when I completed my student teaching experience in Rossford Schools. Sally opened my eyes to the Orff-Schulwerk process of teaching elementary music. With this process, students are able to explore and create different music concepts with student led activities. Imitation, experimentation, and personal expression occur naturally as students become confident, life-long musicians and creative problem solvers. The Orff approach to teaching is a model for optimal learning in 21st Century classrooms. I have my level I Orff-Schulwerk certification and plan on achieving level II and level III within the next few years. I am also a member of the Northwest Ohio Orff Chapter #90 where I currently serve as the President-Elect. This organization of music teachers come together four times throughout the year and share ideas and innovations on different aspects of teaching elementary music.
In 2016, I graduated with my Master's degree in the field of Educational Technology from the University of Toledo. I am certainly positive that I want to continue teaching music, but, I would like to gain more knowledge on how to incorporate new technologies in and out of my classroom.
In my free time, I love going to concerts, movies, sporting events, and much more! I am a a huge fan of the Detroit Red Wings, Detroit Lions, and The University of Michigan (Go Blue!). I am also a HUGE fan of Star Wars. My inner nerd has been shown to my students when I frequently use Star Wars jokes in the classroom. I am also known for singing our National Anthem at various sporting events around the area such as The Toledo Mud Hens, Toledo Walleye, and Run or Dye 5K marathons.
I am looking forward to this upcoming year and share my passion and knowledge for music with all of my students.
